Speed:
The speed you will be
able to receive broadband often starts at 512k and can
go up to 24mb. These figures depend on several factors
including:
-
The
package limits from your broadband provider
-
The
distance from your telephone exchange
-
The
quality of the phone lines in your building
Download Limit:
Most
broadband providers will limit you to a certain amount
of downloads or bandwidth every month. For light users
under 5GB should be fine but heavy or business users
should look at over 15GB (or unlimited) if possible.
Fair
Usage: Some broadband providers do not limit you to
a certain amount but request you use their server fairly
and do not consistently go over a level that would be
detrimental to other customers of the provider.
Contract:
The amount of time you are tied down to the paying for
the broadband providers service. If you wish to leave
the contract there will often be a penalty fine to pay.
MAC Code:
The MAC code is a 17 or 18 digit code you must
obtain from your current broadband provider if you wish
to leave them for another provider. This is often known
as 'migration'. MAC stands for Migration Authority Code.
LLU:
Local
Loop Unbundling is a new process where the main
operators (BT and Kingston in the UK) change their local
network (which is the telephone cable from customers
premises to the exchange) available to other companies.
Chosen operators are then able to upgrade individual
lines using DSL technology to offer advanced services.
ISP:
Internet Service Providers is another name used to refer
to broadband suppliers or providers.
